UNIQUE COVERAGE – Emergency Response & Medical Treatment

You may be aware that ASCIP provides a reimbursement benefit when your district calls 911 to respond to a medical emergency for students and non-employees on your district’s premises. But, did you know that ASCIP also provides medical reimbursement coverage for accidents to K-12 students, and pre-school children on college campuses, while at school or a school sponsored and supervised activity?

When ASCIP member, Ontario-Montclair School District reviewed their loss trends with their ASCIP Risk Services consultant last year, they noticed that one particular school, Lincoln Elementary School which houses a severe special education program, had the top number of injuries with a very high total incurred loss value. The District team of Phil Hillman, Chief Business Official; Jordan Aquino, Chief Financial Officer and Terri Douglas, Workers’ Compensation Technician, met with the school Principal, Bill Corrette to review the losses and discuss solutions. Bill was shocked by the numbers and stated that he has never reviewed this data in his years as principal. The team discussed many ideas and agreed to a two-prong approach.
Addressing Sexual Misconduct and Bullying in Schools

At the 2017 PRIMA Annual Conference, a panel discussed issues pertaining to sexual misconduct and bullying in schools. The panel included:

Sexual Misconduct
Sexual misconduct cases can result in significant liability for school districts. Two recent cases highlighted were a $3 million jury award in Florida in August 2016 and a California case in March 2017 that settled for $8.25 million. These awards highlight the importance of schools training their staff to recognize potential sexual abuse situations so that they can be prevented.
