ASCIP Supports “National Child Abuse Prevention Month”

April 17, 2015

We All Can Play a Part in Protecting Children!

elbow-children-line.jpg
April is a time to focus on the important role that schools play in helping to protect children.

Child abuse and neglect continue to be a national problem. More than 3.8 million reports of child abuse involving almost 680,000 victims occurred in the United States in fiscal year 2012 with over 1,600 deaths related to child abuse in that year.  A recent news article published by the San Gabriel Valley Tribune states “Sexual Allegations Against Teachers in California Jumped 70% in 2014“.  Within ASCIP’s member Districts, about 3.6 percent of all liability claims amounting to approximately 14.6 percent of our incurred liability claim dollars are associated with allegations of child abuse during the past three years.  Approximately 15 cents of every dollar!

Together We Can Make A Difference!

To impact this staggering trend everyone’s participation is critical! Creating a culture of safety and promoting protective guidelines in every interaction with children, is the best thing your District can do to protect children and create safer environments for them. It requires everyone within your District – the Board, teachers and faculty, coaches, counselors, bus drivers, administrators, classified support staff, and volunteers – to establish and maintain high professional, moral, and ethical standards with respect to interaction and conduct with students, including an understanding of and adhering to the appropriate interpersonal boundaries between adults and students.

ASCIP Support For Members
ASCIP values its members desire to create safe, nurturing environments to enhance their students’ learning and growth – environments that are free from fear, neglect and abuse. To support members’ efforts, during the entire month of April, ASCIP will share up-to-date Child Abuse Prevention Guidelines and tools to assist in enhancing District’s child abuse prevention efforts.  These tools are posted on our website in the Risk Services/Risk Management area as a resource to schools.
