You may be aware that ASCIP provides a reimbursement benefit when your district calls 911 to respond to a medical emergency for students and non-employees on your district’s premises.  But, did you know that ASCIP also provides medical reimbursement coverage for accidents to K-12 students, and pre-school children on college campuses, while at school or a school sponsored and supervised activity?

The medical reimbursement coverage was added to the Memorandum of Coverage in 2016 under Endorsement No. 4.  This coverage assists with out-of-pocket medical costs for student injuries occurring on district premises or during sponsored activities regardless of fault.  The ultimate benefit of the coverage is that it allows members to create goodwill and reduces the likelihood that parents file a tort claim to recover medical expenses.  This coverage does not replace the Education Code obligation to offer Student Accident Insurance.

Recently, a Fullerton School District parent benefited from this coverage when her son’s arm was broken during PE.  According to Laurie Bruneau, the District’s Risk Manager, the parent was extremely upset about the medical costs and the impacts to her family.  This coverage resulted in a positive outcome.  The parent afterward shared,  “Thanks to your help,  the  insurance  reimbursed almost all of our out-of-pocket costs. The claim was handled very professionally and fast.  It was a big relief to us.  I just want to say thank you.”
