In 2013, ASCIP began offering an annual Risk Control Grant program as a partnership with members to help them develop one-time, innovative projects that could benefit the entire membership with their risk management and loss control efforts. ASCIP is excited to announce the realization of one such grant award – STAT! This was introduced to you at our Annual Membership Meeting last year. The Simulated Threat Assessment Trainer (STAT) is now available for all members to use.
STAT provides laptop training for school Administrators, Psychologists, Counselors, Teachers and any staff who interact with students. STAT helps staff to practice conducting threat assessment interviews, how to best communicate with students, along with interview and response techniques. The training consists of a staff member asking questions to an avatar or “Virtual Student”. The avatar may become agitated or calm down depending upon the nature of the staff’s questions, helping staff to learn how their demeanor and line of questioning can either escalate or calm a situation.
STAT presents real-world instructional scenarios and incorporates best practices and evidence based threat assessment response processes. Developed in collaboration with the Santa Ana Unified School District (SAUSD) and the University of Southern California Institute for Creative Technologies, STAT features research technologies such as virtual humans and intelligent tutoring to create a challenging, yet engaging learning experience.
Through our partnership with SAUSD, and ASCIP’s Grant program, we are able to make this program available to all ASCIP members. Please contact Martha Espinoza at 562-404-8029, or espinoza@ascip.org for more information about this useful training tool. She can provide you with the district user agreement, and technical specifications needed to run the program.
